Nyungwe Forest National Park

OVERVIEW

Extending over 1,015km2, Nyungwe is the largest montane forest in East Africa with 85 species of mammals, 310 birds, 13 primate species and a chimpanzee population of around 500. While here, you can choose from the activities below;

Canopy Walk

This is good for bird and primates watching.

Ngabwe Trail.

This 4.7km long trail lasts 3 hours and is set on the park’s eastern boundary. It goes through a variety of vegetation Zones with patches of a mature forest filled with strangler fig trees. It is possible to extend this walk upto 8 hours through Kitabi Tea plantations.

Bigugu Trail

This rather difficult 6.7km trail lasts 6hours and leads you to the highest point in Nyungwe forest. This trail goes through beautiful wild flowers; red-hot pokers, orchids to giant lobelias.

Birding & Mangabey Tracking On The Rangiro Road

For committed birdwatchers, this dirt road is considered the best excursion. The diversity in habitat is amazing from high to low elevation forest and spectacular views into the forest canopies.

The Grey-Cheeked Mangabey is easy to access because a habituated tropop lives in the nearby about 7km from the junction.

Kamiranzovu Marsh Trail

Before forest elephants became extinct, they used to flock this Kamiranzovu wetland. Special birds to look out for here include Grauer’s rush warbler and Albertine Owlet.

Karamba Birding Trail

This trail is superb for its bird watching and it is easy to walk. It is 4.5kms, lasts around 3hours and easy to conquer.

Gisakura Tea Estate

This activity is a relict forest patch situated in the Gisakura Tea Estate. There are about 50 Rwenzori Colobus Monkey with easy and beautiful possibilities of photography. You can spot 40 species of birds in one hour for example the Mountain Oriole, White tailed crested flycatcher.
