Number of Gorilla permits are Available in Rwanda
Each day, Volcanoes National Park issues 96 gorilla trekking permits, corresponding to 12 habituated gorilla groups that are open to visitors. An additional eight habituated groups also live within the park but are typically reserved for research due to their remote and less accessible locations.
In the event that one of the tourist-designated groups moves across the border into Uganda or the DRC, one of the research groups is temporarily made available for trekking, ensuring that visitor experiences are not disrupted.
How to acquire a Gorilla Permit in Rwanda
Independent travelers can book gorilla permits directly online through the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) website. Alternatively, permits can be arranged through the tour operator organizing your trip. Since permits often sell out in advance, it’s highly recommended to secure yours before finalizing any travel dates.
- Cost of Gorilla Permits in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park
As of 2025, the cost of a single mountain gorilla tracking permit in Rwanda costs US$1500 for visitors from outside Africa, US$200 for citizens of Rwanda and other East African countries. The permit cost for foreign residents of Rwanda as well as citizens and residents of other African countries is US$500. This permit allows you one hour with the primates.
- Permit Discounts offered in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park
A 30% discount on gorilla trekking permits is available during Rwanda’s low season, from November to May, reducing the cost for non-African residents to USD $1,050. To qualify, visitors must pre-book at least two nights in either Akagera National Park, Nyungwe National Park, or one night in each, and provide payment receipts for accommodation and at least one paid activity in either park.
Each traveler is eligible for one discounted permit per 3-day/2-night stay in Akagera and/or Nyungwe. To trek gorillas more than once at the discounted rate, an additional qualifying stay is required for each permit.
A separate 15% discount is also available to visitors attending conferences in Rwanda. To apply, travelers must submit an invitation letter, registration confirmation, or payment receipt. During the conference, attendees may be required to show their conference badge.
- Is it possible to Cancel or Reschedule a permit in Rwanda?
Please note: Gorilla trekking permits are non-refundable, and if you fail to show up on your scheduled trekking date, the permit will be considered expired. Permits are non-transferable, as your passport details are matched with the permit before the trek.
However, if you book through a tour operator, it is often possible to reschedule your permit with at least 30 days’ notice. A rescheduling fee of 20% of the original permit cost applies.
Exceptions are made in certain cases:
- If you are unable to track due to the unexpected movement of your assigned gorilla group, you may be offered an opportunity to trek the following day or receive a full refund.
- If you track for the full day but do not encounter any gorillas, you are entitled to a 75% refund.
What does a Gorilla Permit in Volcanoes National Park Cover?
A gorilla Permit in Rwanda only covers entrance to the national park, a guided trek and a maximum of one hour with the gorillas. It does not include potter fees, tips to trackers or guides or any costs related to accommodation, transport, meals or any other activities.
Age Limit for Trekking Mountain Gorillas
Mountain gorilla trekking is permitted only for individuals aged 15 and above, as agreed upon by the three countries where the activity is offered. While there’s no maximum age limit, the trek can be strenuous, so older travelers or those with mobility challenges should carefully assess their own fitness before deciding to take part.
Gorilla Trekking for the Disabled and Seniors
A sedan chair or locally known as an African Helicopter is a specially designed seat mounted on poles, used to carry visitors who may have mobility challenges or difficulty with the demanding hike through the forest. It is carried by a team of porters and provides a comfortable and safe way for individuals to reach the gorilla tracking location without physically trekking the terrain themselves. The cost for the sedan chair ranges from US$ 300 – US$ 500 per person in Volcanoes National Park which cost may vary based on availability. The fee covers both the chair and the porters carrying it. Its best to inform your operator in advance if you will require one so that it is secured for you. The number of sedan chairs is limited.

The chances of seeing gorillas in Volcanoes National Park are very high, estimated at around 98-99%. This is due to the park’s high number of habituated gorilla families and the organized gorilla trekking process that ensures all trekkers have a chance to spot the gorillas.
