Lake Mutanda

Lake Mutanda is renowned for its crystal-clear waters, which are framed by lush green hills and the striking backdrop of the Virunga Mountain range. The lake covers an area of approximately 3.5 square kilometers and is located about 13 kilometers from Kisoro town. Its calm waters reflect the surrounding peaks, creating a picturesque setting that enchants visitors. Often overshadowed by Uganda’s more famous attractions, Lake Mutanda is a hidden gem that deserves a spot on every traveler’s itinerary.  Lake Mutanda is a tranquil oasis that offers breathtaking views and a myriad of activities for adventurers and nature lovers alike.

The lake is part of a delicate ecosystem that supports a variety of flora and fauna. It is home to numerous fish species, including tilapia and catfish, making it a popular spot for fishing enthusiasts. The surrounding wetlands and forests provide a habitat for diverse bird species, making Lake Mutanda a paradise for birders. Lake Mutanda is a small, freshwater lake in the far southwest of Uganda, close to Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga national parks. It is drained by the Rutshuru River, flowing northward to Lake Edward. Lake Mutanda is a 30-minute drive from the center of Kisoro. With an altitude of 1,800m, it is a great place to hike, and it offers breath-taking views of The Virunga Mountains. 

ACTIVITIES TO DO WHILE AT LAKE MUTANDA

  • HIKING THE MOUNTAIN VOLCANOES

There are three extinct volcanoes which are part of the Virunga massif that are in viewing range around Lake Mutanda. The volcanoes give a beautiful and picturesque backdrop to the shimmery waters of Lake Mutanda. If you are a keen hiker, it is worth packing a pair of sturdy walking boots, as you will not want to miss the stunning views that these walks offer.

  • MOUNTAIN MUHABURA: With an elevation of 4127m, Mount Muhabura is the 3rd highest range of the Virunga Mountains offering breathtaking views of Lake Edward, Bwindi and Rwenzori peaks. The one day hike is worth it for the beautiful panoramic and scenic views of the surroundings.
  • MOUNTAIN SABINYO: Locally referred to as the Old man’s teeth because of its terrain that resembles worn out teeth, this is the oldest volcano of the Virunga massif. With an elevation of 3669 m, Mount Sabinyo’s strenuous hiking trails offer a chance to stand in three countries at the same time.
  • MOUNTAIN GAHINGA: Standing tall at an elevation of 3473 meters, Mount Gahinga offers exciting encounters of wildlife from the endangered mountain gorilla to the regal sunbird that dwell in the bamboo forests on its slopes. The hike takes about 6-7 hours of exploration in the mountain ranges.
  • VISITING THE GARAMA CAVES

The Garama caves were formerly inhabited by the Batwa people before they were resettled outside the Bwindi impenetrable forests. This tourism trail led by a Batwa guide will be an insightful adventure into the culture and way of life of the Batwa people.

VISITING THE ISLANDS

Lake Mutanda has 15 islands which have an iconic ancient story attached to them. A tour in a traditional dugout canoe will be insightful in understanding the cultural tapestry of the islands. Mutanda Island is inhabited by the Abagesera people who have built a church at the center of the island. You can visit the haunted punishment island where outcasts were left to die or the python island where you can see the resident giant snakes.

CANOEING

The lake is known to have the most tranquil and fresh waters which makes canoeing the most relaxing activity to do after a long day of gorilla trekking in the neighboring Bwindi and Mgahinga forests. You may spot African clawless otters and various bird species like the pied kingfishers.

MOUNTAIN BIKING

Adrenaline junkies can spend hours of biking on the slopes of the Virunga Mountains. Feel the rush of wind on your face as you ride through the lush green forest and shores of Lake Mutanda.

SPORT FISHING

Lake Mutanda has a variety of fish like tilapia and catfish and those who love to fish will find this very exciting. Take a canoe and enjoy the feel of the sunset as you try your luck for a big catch.

With over 200 bird species recorded around Lake Mutanda, bird watching is a popular activity for bird lovers. The diverse habitats surrounding the lake attract both resident and migratory birds. Keep your eyes open for sunbirds, pin-tailed whydahs and gray crowned cranes.

HOW TO GET THERE

Reaching Lake Mutanda is relatively straightforward. The most common route is via Kisoro town, which is accessible by road from major cities like Kampala and Kigali. The drive offers scenic views of Uganda’s countryside, making the journey part of the experience. Once in Kisoro, local transport options, including boda-bodas (motorcycles) and taxis, can take you to the lake.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

The lake is accessible all throughout the year but the dry months of June to September and December to February offer better scenic and picturesque views. Hiking trails are also dry during these months making the hikes less strenuous. Whether you’re seeking adventure through hiking and fishing, or you prefer a tranquil boat ride surrounded by the serene landscape, Lake Mutanda has something for everyone.
