Mount Gahinga Hike

Mount Gahinga is an extinct dormant volcano in Mgahinga National park, south western Uganda. The mountain is the smallest of the three volcanoes; Muhabura and Sabinyo in the vicinity of Mgahinga national park. The name Gahinga is derived from the local Kinyarwanda dialect meaning “A pile of stones” which refers to the volcanic formations that adorn the Mountain slopes. This lesser-known gem, part of the Virunga Mountain Range, is an excellent destination for hikers seeking a unique experience away from the more popular trails. Standing at 3,474 meters, Mount Gahinga offers breathtaking views, diverse ecosystems, and a chance to connect with the vibrant local communities.

The trail to the summit of Mount Gahinga is approximately 8 kilometers long and generally takes 6-8 hours to complete, depending on your fitness level and pace. The hike begins at the Ntebeko Trailhead, where you’ll sign in at the park office, be briefed and assigned a ranger guide. The first part of the trail takes you through dense bamboo forests, where the sound of rustling leaves and chirping birds creates a symphony of nature. As you ascend, the trail becomes steeper, and you will see various animals, primates like golden monkeys, vervet and red tailed monkeys and different bird species. Keep an eye out for the unique plant species that thrive in this montane ecosystem, such as giant lobelias and groundsels. After a challenging but rewarding hike, you’ll finally reach the summit. The panoramic views from Mount Gahinga are truly breathtaking. On a clear day, you can see the majestic peaks of the Virunga range, the Rwenzori ranges, the lush valleys of Uganda, and the distant Lake Edward. The summit area features a 180 meter wide volcanic crater, often filled with a dense forest that adds to the allure.
