THE TREKKING EXPERIENCE
Gorilla trekking takes place once every day with only a group of eight visiting each gorilla family. The trekking experience starts with briefing at the park headquarters in Nkuringo, Rushaga, Ruhija and Buhoma where you are assigned ranger guides to lead you on this exciting expedition. The trekking may take between 1 to 7 hours considering where the gorillas are found. The experience is nothing less than awe as the male silverback raises to welcome you to its family and the whole group receives you with hospitality. By the end of the hour, you will have enough pictures and videos to take back home with you. The parks are also very vibrant with lush green vegetation and various colorful bird species like the Rwenzori turaco and the great blue turaco.
WHERE TO STAY
Bwindi and Mgahinga national parks are well situated near the towns of Kabale and Kisoro which have accommodation facilities ranging from luxury to budget friendly places. There are some places that have been established within the park borders making it even more comfortable to trek the gorillas. Some of the facilities include Mount Gahinga lodge, Mgahinga gorilla triangle lodge, Ntebeko River Camp and Buhoma Lodge, Bwindi Guest House, Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge in Mgahinga and Bwindi Impenetrable national parks respectively.
WHEN TO VISIT
While gorilla trekking can be done year-round, the best times to visit are during the dry seasons of June to September and December to February. These months typically offer easier hiking conditions as the trails are dry and better visibility for spotting wildlife. However, visiting during the rainy seasons of March to May and October to November can also be rewarding, as the forests are lush and vibrant with fewer tourists and chances of getting discounts on accommodation and permits.
PREPARING TO TREK
Gorilla trekking is one of those activities you want to be adequately prepared for. Packing light-weight neutral colored clothing, long sleeves and trousers will protect you against insects and wild plants that can be allergic to the skin. Sturdy hiking boots, sunscreen, a lunch pack, water bottle, snacks, insect repellent, and a camera with a zoom lens for capturing those unforgettable moments will all come in handy for a beautiful experience.
