GEOGRPHICAL LOCATION
Gahinga stands at 3,474 meters 11,396 feet, is the smallest of the volcanoes in the Virunga range but one of the most fascinating. It has a distinct shape, with a large crater at its peak. The name Gahinga comes from the Kinyarwanda word gahinga meaning small stones. The name is derived from the volcanic debris, mainly small rocks that the volcano regularly produces. Gahinga was formed by alternating layers of solidified lava flows and volcanic ash. The volcano, like many in the region, has not been active in recent times, with the last known eruption occurring about 4,000 years ago. However, its activity in the distant past has helped shape the landscape of the surrounding area, leaving behind rich soils and dramatic landscapes.
