Bwindi Impenetrable National Park Gorilla Sectors
Bwindi is divided into four trekking sectors, each with its distinct characteristics and habituated gorilla families.
1. Buhoma Sector
- Located in the northern part of Bwindi, Buhoma is the most popular and accessible sector.
- Known for the Mubare Group, the first habituated gorilla family in Uganda, alongside other groups like Habinyanja and Rushegura.
- Offers additional attractions like community walks and birding trails.
2. Ruhija Sector
- Situated in the eastern part of the park, Ruhija is ideal for visitors seeking quieter treks.
- Home to groups like Oruzogo, Kyaguliro, and Bitukura.
- The sector boasts breathtaking views of the forest and opportunities for bird watching.
3. Rushaga Sector
- Found in the southern part of Bwindi, Rushaga has the highest number of habituated gorilla families, including Nshongi, Kahungye, and Bweza.
- Unique for offering gorilla habituation experiences, where visitors spend four hours with semi-habituated gorillas.
4. Nkuringo Sector
- Located in the southwestern part of Bwindi, Nkuringo is famous for its challenging treks and stunning views.
- Home to the Nkuringo Group, known for its fascinating dynamics.
- Perfect for adventurous travelers who enjoy rugged terrain.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park Gorilla Sector
Mgahinga, though smaller than Bwindi, is part of the Virunga Massif, a shared habitat for mountain gorillas across Uganda, Rwanda, and DR Congo.
1. Nyakagezi Group
- The sole habituated gorilla group in Mgahinga, Nyakagezi is known for its stability and large size.
- Treks here often include scenic views of the park’s iconic volcanoes: Mount Gahinga, Mount Muhabura, and Mount Sabyinyo.
- Mgahinga also offers a cultural twist with the Batwa Trail Experience, where visitors learn about the indigenous Batwa pygmies.
Choosing Your Gorilla Sector
- Accessibility: Buhoma is the easiest to reach, while Nkuringo and Rushaga require more time and effort.
- Gorilla Groups: Rushaga has the most options, while Mgahinga offers an exclusive experience with fewer tourists.
- Additional Activities: For cultural experiences, consider Mgahinga’s Batwa Trail or Buhoma’s community walks.
Both Bwindi and Mgahinga promise unforgettable encounters with mountain gorillas, making Uganda a top destination for primate enthusiasts. Whether you prefer the diversity of Bwindi or the exclusivity of Mgahinga, each sector delivers a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
