- Biharwe Eclipse Monument: Embark on a trek to this hilltop site, where you can enjoy a cup of tea while taking in sweeping panoramic views. At the hill’s summit stands a striking monument an imposing golden orb supported by three pillars, symbolizing the three ancient kingdoms of Bunyoro, Ankole, and Buganda.
This monument commemorates the historic solar eclipse estimated to have happened in 1520 AD. According to oral tradition, the collapse of the Bachwezi Empire in the 15th century led to the rise of several smaller kingdoms, with Bunyoro initially emerging as the dominant force. Not long after that the Omukama Olimi I of Bunyoro launched a series of cattle raids into Buganda and Ankole, resulting in widespread famine.
However, during one such raid, the skies suddenly darkened in broad daylight an event believed to be the solar eclipse of 1520. Terrified, the Omukama fled back to Bunyoro, abandoning his stolen cattle. The Ankole people reclaimed the livestock, using them to rebuild their herds and, in turn, their kingdom. This celestial event is remembered as a turning point in the region’s history and a symbolic moment in the birth of the Ankole Kingdom.

Following her untimely death believed to have been orchestrated by her husband, Murari local lore speaks of a series of calamities that befell the region. These events gave rise to the Nyabingi spiritual movement, wherein mediums, known as abagirwa, claimed to channel the spirit of Queen Kitami to seek justice and guidance. Their shrine is located close to Lake Bunyonyi.
