After breakfast, you will be meeting your driver guide for briefing about this exciting itinerary and later, set off for Nyungwe Forest National Park. Exit Kigali for 6-7 hours’ drive via the Southern Province in Rwanda and en-route, you will be in position to make a stopover at the Nyanza King’s palace, ethnographic museum and other locations. Continue on a scenic drive and arrive at the park early enough to check in at your respective places for stay.
Today, your primate adventure requires that you wake up early, prepare and take tea then depart from the lodge. Gather at Cyamudongo or Uwinka reception and get briefed about chimpanzee trekking regulations. Over 500 chimpanzees survive within Nyungwe Forest NP and you will be searching for already habituated communities with Nyungwe park guide.
In addition, other primates will also be spotted including olive baboons, grey-cheeked mangabeys, l’hoest monkeys, owl-faced monkeys, and many birds. Your afternoon will be better spent on a guided canopy walk for 2 hours through the 200m long walkway.
Following a hefty breakfast, check out and transfer to Volcanoes National Park in Northwestern Rwanda. En-route, you will be viewing the scenic Lake Kivu and surrounding area then on arrival at Ruhengeri/Musanze, you will pay a visit to the New Ellen DeGeneres Campus. This is an eco-friendly facility set right next to the park and it is the perfect location to explore more about gorilla conservation. From here, continue to your respective lodges for relaxation and a night stay.
It is your day to meet the endangered mountain gorillas and your adventure demands that you wake up early enough to prepare. Breakfast will be served right at the lodge and after, you will assemble at the park offices (Kinigi) to get briefed about gorilla trekking guidelines. Your actual gorilla trekking to see begins at 8:00am with an experienced guide and out of about 12 habituated gorilla groups, only one family will be visited today by you in a group of 8 guests.
You dedicate 2-6 hours navigating through the forest and at times steep slopes while searching for mountain gorillas. This includes one hour for you to observe how these apes behave but at a recommended distance of about 7-8 meters. When taking pictures, ensure that you have turned off the flashlight from the camera to avoid irritating these apes.
After, begin walking back to the lodge with the park guide on the lead and you will have a relaxed afternoon. Later, consider visiting Iby’Iwacu Village for a memorable cultural experience, get to know various ways of life, traditions and cultures of Rwandese at Iby’Iwacu Village.

Leave your accommodation for briefing in Kinigi and today, you will have insight into golden monkey trekking guidelines. The park official will assign the park guide to accompany you on a search for these unique apes. A trek to see golden monkeys begins at 8:00am and lasts for about 2-4 hours which includes one hour of up close and personal with these unique primates, taking pictures etc. Once you have returned, enjoy early lunch and check out and your driver will bring you back to Kigali capital to be dropped off at the hotel or straight to the airport for departure back home.
