Chimpanzee Trekking In Budongo Forest

Uganda is blessed with the highest population of primate species most of which are recognized as endangered species in the world. Besides Kibale National park, the world’s primate capital, there are other designated areas in the country where you can meet and greet our close relatives, the chimpanzees. Budongo forest is part of the large Murchison Falls Conservation area and is home to a large population of the chimpanzees. The forest is just about 30 minutes’ drive from the Kichumanyobo gate of Murchison falls national park and covers an area of 435sq.kms with the most mahogany trees in Uganda. The main tourist activity done in the Budongo forest is Chimpanzee trekking and habituation. Due to isolation of the forest, it usually attracts big cats like lions therefore you are advised not to leave your group of fellow trackers.

Chimp Trekking Activity in Budongo

In Budongo forest, chimpanzee trekking is done twice a day with the morning shift starting 7am and the afternoon shift starting at 3pm. On arrival, you have to assemble at Kaniyo Pabidi for briefing about the chimpanzee trekking rules. Thereafter, you are assigned an experienced guide to lead you along the tracking trails until you find the chimpanzees. Once the animals have been found, you are allowed an hour of interacting with them and taking pictures. The activity takes about 3 hours and thereafter, you may decide to take a game drive in the Buligi game area or take a boat ride to the bottom of the waterfalls.

The Best Time for Chimpanzee trekking In Budongo Forest.

The chimpanzees are best seen during the rainy seasons as the vegetation which they feed on is in plenty. During the dry season, the chimpanzees move deeper into the forest in search for food making the tracking more tedious. Even with all these weather conditions, chimpanzees can be tracked all year round. Other places to see chimpanzees in Uganda are; Ngamba island chimpanzee sanctuary on Lake Victoria, Kyambura gorge and Kalinzu forest in Queen Elizabeth National park, Bugoma forest and Uganda Wildlife Education Centre.

While on a chimpanzee trekking trip, you may spot numerous birds flying in the woods as you trek. Only 16 permits are issued   per day with groups of 8 allowed per shift. Therefore, it is advised to buy your permit at least a month prior to your visit. On a Uganda Safari Chimpanzee trekking is only allowed for persons above the age of 15.
